This week we thought we’d give you some tips on how to care for your hair extensions. It is important to care for your extensions all year round as both cold and hot weather can cause damage. Below are some tips to follow when caring for both clip in and weft extensions:
Clip-In Extensions - Washing:
- Carefully detangle the hair extensions from clips to ends with a wide tooth comb.
- Holding your hair extensions from the clips, apply a gentle flow of water, allowing it to run down the length of the hair.
- Using tepid water carefully shampoo the hair with either moisturising or detangling shampoo. Without rubbing of twisting the hair, gently squeeze out the shampoo from clip to ends.
- Rinse with clean, tepid water.
- Gently squeeze out the excess water and pat/towel dry. Avoid rolling or rubbing the hair dry in a towel.
- Again, with a wide tooth comb carefully detangle the hair. Start with the ends and gradually move upwards to remove any tangles, be careful not to pull too hard. Do not brush when wet!
- Let the hair extensions air dry. If you don’t have much time you can blow dry, make sure you use a low or cool setting.
- When the hair is completely dry, store with clips closed to avoid tangling.
Weft Extensions:
Weft hair extensions can either be clipped in or sewn in. For clip in weft extensions you can follow the above steps to maintain your hair. Below are some tips you can follow when caring for sewn in weft extensions:
- At night wrap your hair in a silk scarf and stocking (stocking is to keep the scarf in place).
- Try styling your weave a maximum of twice a week.
- Try not to put your hair into a ponytail too often or too tight.
- If your weave is curly then part into four sections at night to ensure no tangling.
- At least once a week go through your rows and apply a moisturising hair and scalp cream.
- Don’t put any type of grease or oil on your weave, i.e. olive oil sheen.
- Shedding of extensions is normal as extensions have been cut at the track.
- When sleeping make sure the closure piece is held down firmly.

The Knot
The best way to describe this tightly wound knot is simple but striking. It is a very wearable style and can be created easily. To achieve this look:
- Blow-dry your hair straight.
- Centre part your hair (if you want to).
- Secure hair into a firm ponytail at the nape and spritz with shine mist.
You have then created the look and you can choose to wrap the tail into any look that you prefer, e.g, a loop with the ends pointing up or tucked under, a round ballet bun, or the classic double knot. Seal your hair with a spritz of anti-frizz spray.
The Braid
Throughout every season the braid has been appealing. It is so simple yet it can really provide a dramatic effect to your look. To achieve this look:
- Gather a small section of your hair (from the root) and divide into three sections.
- Take one of the outer sections and cross over the middle section, then take the other outer piece and wrap it over the middle section.
- Continue repeating these steps and tie with a small elastic hair band.
Your look is complete. You can braid any part of your hair in any place you want it to be. You can even clip it to the opposite side of your head.
The Low Pony
The defining points of the modern ponytail is that they are positioned low and hovering either just at or below the nape, and ironed straight to emphasis the length of the pony. To achieve this look:
- Straighten your hair, use a heat protection serum before doing so.
- Gather your hair into a low ponytail, fastening at the nape.
- If you are looking to shape your face you can pull a few strands forward.
You have now achieved the low ponytail. You can choose from a selection of hair bands including a wide hair band and even ribbon.
It’s important to look after your hair any time of year, particularly in the Winter. This is because the cold weather can make your hair dry and static. Prepare your hair for the cold with these great tips:
- Dry your hair before you leave the house! Especially on cold days...Drying your hair will protect you from nasty colds that are worth avoiding in the Winter months.
- Throughout the winter months try to leave your hair alone and test different low maintenance styles...think of it as hair hibernation. Playing with your hair too much can cause shedding as well as split ends.
- Hot oil treatments! There are various single use hot oil treatments that you can get from your local salon. If you are looking for DIY treatments you can also use extra virgin olive oil. Apply to damp hair and cover with a plastic cap or hot towel. This is great for daily wear and tear!
- Deep conditioning can revive your hair and put back in the nutrients lost from the change in temperature. You can either add some oils to your normal conditioner or buy a deep conditioning treatment.
- Anti Frizz products are great for your hair in the Winter and can reduce static cling and hat hair. Frizz in the Winter is caused by your hair getting too dry...looking after your hair will make sure it is frizz free.
- Don’t wash your hair as frequently as normal. Washing it too frequently in the Winter can take out a lot of the moisture. It is best to wash your hair every third day or every other day.
